Laura Mulvey’s theory applies to the music videos “Dirty” and “Do it Like a Dude” because both videos invite the audience to view the artists as objects of desire. This is done through the camera shots and angles used, the fact the video is presented in a voyeuristic way to the audience, and the way the artist interacts with others in the video. In Christina Aguilera’s video of “Dirty” the use of the camera invites sexual gaze by focusing the camera on Christina .She is dancing in ass-less chaps, covered in oil to attract men to watch her videos and gain more views. I think she is exposing herself to present her as a sexual object. The audience views this video in a voyeuristic way because Christina in the video is being presented as an object of desire and the audience are watching the video for pleasure. The video shows Christina dancing in a sexual manner and acting slutty for the audience. The actors interact in a way that results in the female being looked at as an object of desire. This occurs when the men in the video are dancing half naked around other girls and grinding on each other. 2 men are dancing around Christina trying to touch her showing that she is an object of desire. In Jesse J’s video of “Do it Like a Dude” the use of the camera invites sexual gaze by videoing Jessie J in a crouched position, exposing her legs and grabbing her crotch. The camera focuses on her lips , they are studded and unappealing. I think Jessie J is trying to say listen to what she's saying and that she is not just an object of desire. The audience views this video in a voyeuristic way because the camera is always focused on her and other girls with tight clothing and posing in in a sexual position. For example Jessie J in the video , she is squatting down with her legs wide open and grabbing her crotch. I think this will give the audiences entertainment. The actors interact in a way that results in the female being looked at as an object of desire. This occurs when 2 girls stated snogging in front of the camera. They are being portrayed as an object of desire and this will give the audience some pleasure by watching this video. The target audience for these two artists is young females. However, the way they represent themselves as sexual objects does not appeal to young girls, it appeals more to men. I believe Christina Aguilera and Jesse J choose to represent themselves like this because maybe they want to have a wider range of audience. |
